Experience

In his 30-year career as a business litigator and municipal lawyer, Mr. Casey has tried numerous cases before both bench and jury in state and federal courts, represented clients before state and federal administrative bodies, argued numerous appeals before the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit and the Illinois Supreme and Appellate Courts, handled numerous injunction matters, and advocated clients’ positions in arbitrations and mediations. Over the years, Mr. Casey has developed a resolution-first approach to business disputes that focuses on early negotiation, mediation and, if necessary, litigation. He and the Firm have kept their billable rates substantially lower than their peers at larger commercial firms to provide an economic alternative that does not sacrifice excellence.

In a career concentrated on complex business litigation, Mr. Casey has represented multi-national companies, entrepreneurs, not-for-profits, and closely held businesses in a wide variety of litigation matters including health care business disputes, product liability, warranty, and recall disputes and related insurance actions, contract disputes over the sale of businesses, shareholder and partner disputes, construction and related insurance disputes, consumer fraud defense actions, environmental cost recovery disputes, and employment related litigation.

Over his career, Mr. Casey also has handled numerous governmental litigation and counseling matters for state and municipal agencies and elected officials, including the Illinois Supreme Court, the Governor of the State of Illinois, the Mayor of the City of Chicago, the Chicago Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority, the Chicago Transit Authority, the Chicago Housing Authority, the Police Board of the City of Chicago, and the Chicago-Gary Regional Airport Authority. Mr. Casey currently represents the City of Chicago Police Board as its general counsel, advising the Police Board on a variety of matters including freedom of information, open meetings, and ethical issues involving state and municipal statutes, ordinances, and regulations. He also serves in a similar capacity as counsel for the Chicago-Gary Regional Airport Authority. Previously, Mr. Casey was Chief of the Legal Counsel Division of the City of Chicago’s Law Department, where he served as counsel to the mayor, city council, aldermen, and city commissioners, and as legal coordinator of intergovernmental affairs and all municipal legislation.
